September 10, Castro de Baroña, La Coruña

Our morning adventure today was to Castro de Baroña which are 2000 year old ruins of a Celtic fort. Right now it is just the stone bases of 20 or so buildings but it was really interesting to be there and try to imagine people living there that long ago. It is protected on three sides by water, and actually a lot of the time is an island when the tide comes in more. Most of the areas where people lived were in the mountains for protection so this one is different.

After a short description and tour, we all wandered around a bit, some going down to the beach and others climbing to the top of a tall rock nearby. I sat with a few people just relaxing in the sun and watching the beach and the ocean and then we saw dolphins! Lots of dolphins. It was a line they were all following and we would see one group and then later another group followed by another. There were probably about 30 in total.

Lunch was a short ways away in the bus, different by being family style, and then we all headed to La Coruña. It is the second largest city in Galicia, and was the capital before Santiago. It is on the coast and has lots of beach and city life that we got to enjoy. The majority of us went to the beach when we got there even though it wasn't that warm anymore because it was the evening. Quite a few people went in the water which was originally too cold for me, but then I got persuaded to join them. My skin felt a little numb all over at first because of the water but then it wasn't that bad.

After that I went on a run with Kelly and Tom where we ran along the coast on a path next to the road out to a tower and then a point with a cool sculpture. They ran faster than me so it was hard to keep up, but running around cities when I'm there is a really fun experience to explore them and see more.

Dinner with Kelly, Nikki, Laura and Tom, and then we went out to a bar with a big group of people from our program getting back to the hotel at about 2 am.
